RON’S MOM: A WALL by ANY OTHER NAME…

A Wall by Any Other Name…

The “Big Beautiful Wall” has now become “Steel Slats.”

The name for the wall that has aspirations of being built as a barrier along the U.S -Mexico border has been tweaked to become more favorable for financing approval.  It is believed that the opposition to the financing would appear more amenable to delegating money for “fencing” rather than a “wall.”

During one of our President’s recent bill signings. It was stated it did not matter what people called it: “One way or the other we’re going to get a wall, we’re going to get a barrier. You can name it anything you want.” These statements are contrary to a time when another one of our former presidential candidates called the wall, a fence. He was called out by another candidate by this reply, ” It’s not a fence, it’s a WALL, and there’s a BIG difference!”

There is a quote from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet that is one of my favorites and is also a very profound one. It gives credence to my personal sentiments. It suggests that a name is simply a label to identify one thing from another.

In Romeo and Juliet, Act 11, the lovers were forbidden to be in love, simply because of their names.  Juliet exposes the ridiculousness of the feud between the two families over, simply, who they are.  What the feud is about is, therefore, unknown and irrelevant. The same with the name of the wall. Even though it is known to us WHY it is being called by different names, the name does not represent its value, worthiness, or true meaning.

A rose, if called something entirely different, would still smell as sweet as it does with the name “rose.” Juliet likens this to Romeo – Romeo is still the man she loves had he a different name. What is his name but, simply, a label?  It does not define him as a man. Hence, a wall is a wall, a name does not define the value or the usefulness of the so-called “Beautiful Wall'” nor does, Steel Slats.” It is still a wall and will be defined only by its true purpose and intentions!  The wall will smell as sweet as a rose only if the intentions and purpose are truly honorable. Otherwise, it may have the stink of and may be called a pig sty!!

What’s in a name? that which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet;
