ESSAY-LIKE SUNDAY MORNING: WITHOUT A DOUBT

ESSAY-LIKE SUNDAY MORNING: Today’s lesson was taught by Me. The lesson was entitled WITHOUT A DOUBT. The Scripture was from Judges 4:1-10. The KEY VERSE was verse 9a which reads, “Certainly I will go with you,” said Deborah. “But because of the course you are taking, the honor will not be yours, for the LORD will deliver Sisera into the hands of woman.” (NIV)

In today’s lesson, we discussed a mighty prophetess and judge named Deborah. The name Deborah means, BEE, as in bumblebee, for she could “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee“, and what a powerful sting this bee had. Her sting was her faith in God. Her sting came from knowing that He would neither, “leaver her nor forsake her”. However, the same could not be said of her General—General Barak!

We can deduce that Barak was a great military man by the fact that the wise judge Deborah chose him to lead an army against the Canaanites in the first place. She was too wise and too confident to have chosen someone incapable of performing the task at hand, but one thing was missing from Barak’s armory, and that one thing was CONFIDENCE. Lucky for him, Deborah had that in spades.

He said, “I’ll go forward and fight this battle Judge, but only if you go with me.” Deborah replied, “Sure, I’ll go with you but don’t think you’re going to get to claim the victory. That honor will belong to “a woman.” So, the army went forward, led physically by Barak, but Spiritually by Deborah, and was victorious.

What is the opposite of DOUBT? Assurance, belief, certainty, CONFIDENCE, conviction, decision, determination, persuasion, resolution, resolve. The song, CONFIDENCE by Joel A. Erickson says it well:

“We will not falter in the battle,

For by the grace of God we’ll stand,

And while we use our Captain’s armor,

No one can pluck us from His hand;

He is our confidence and courage,

While we obey we’ll never fall;

Let us be true, and fight in Jesus’ might,

Follow our mighty Captain’s call.

Lord, I need grace to be Your soldier—

Grace that will bear the battle’s din;

Strengthen me at my post of duty,

That I may conquer every sin;

You are my confidence and courage,

Not a defeat You’ve ever known;

I will not quit nor yield, but trust Your shield,

Strong in the strength You give Your own.

We will not fear the foe’s appearance,

For we are led by Christ our King:

He is the Captain of Salvation,

And of His conquests we will sing;

He is our confidence and courage,

He is the One Who set us free;

And with our hearts aglow we’ll rout the foe,

For He has promised victory”

“Faith and doubt cannot exist in the same mind at the same time, for one will dispel the other.”
