ESSAY-LIKE MONDAY MORNING: Yesterday’s lesson was expertly taught by Sister Johnson. It was entitled, “GOD’S SAVING LOVE”. The Scripture was from, John 3:1-16. The KEY VERSE was verse 16 which reads, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (KJV).
Today, I want to focus on verses 1-3 which read, “There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: (2) The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. (3) Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (KJV).More specifically, I want to focus on what is spoken BETWEEN verses 2 and 3. At first glance, there may appear to be nothing between those two verses, but there is a BUT!
Nicodemus is himself, a man of God, or at the very least, a man of the God’s Law. He is an expert on the Law. As a matter of fact, he is one of the greatest teachers of the Law in the land, BUT he has been observing Jesus’ words and actions (His miracles) and has become intrigued by them. He and his fellow experts of the Law, have discussed and debated the nature of Jesus’ power and authority. They agree that He is a great teacher and a man sent by God, BUT so or they (or so they think). Why aren’t THEY able to do what Jesus is doing?
So, Nicodemus gets tired of wondering about it, and comes to talk to Jesus at night. He comes at night so as not to be seen by his cohorts. Once in the presence of the Lord, he compliments Him and acknowledges that He is a great teacher and a man of God, BUT before he can go any further, Jesus says, “It is true, BUT, unless a man (meaning you Nick) is BORN AGAIN, he cannot SEE the Kingdom of God”. (The implication being that, Jesus’ power and authority comes from God, but unless a person makes a spiritual change, they won’t be able to tap into that power).
You see, Jesus knew what Nicodemus really wanted to ask about. He wanted to know HOW Jesus was able to do and say the things he did. He wanted to know how he could get what Jesus had, BUT he didn’t get a chance to ask his question, for Jesus read his mind; He knew Nicodemus’ intentions even before they were spoken. YES, Jesus is a mind reader! He knows what your wants, wishes, and needs are, even before you do.
Jesus broke it down for Nick by saying, in essence, “You can’t get there from where you are Nicodemus”, BUT, there is a way.
Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, no man sees the Father, except He goes by the Son. God sent His Son to us to show us the way. Through Him God showed us His LOVE, MERCY, and His GRACE. If we follow Jesus’ commandments and LOVE our neighbors as ourselves, we’ll notice a spiritual change within ourselves; a REBIRTH; the SPIRITUAL REBIRTH which, according to Jesus, is required to see the Kingdom of God.
