ESSAY-LIKE SUNDAY MORNING: Today’s lesson was expertly taught by Sister Johnson. The title of today’s lesson was, “WORD AND WORKS”. The Scripture was from Psalm 33:1-9. The KEY VERSE was verse 6 which reads, “By the Word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of His mouth (NIV). Today’s lesson explores the topic of praising God the Creator as we focus on His Word and His works.
The lesson points out how we heap praise upon PEOPLE who create things for us, (e.g. entertainers, scientists, craftsmen, artists etc.) or we receive praise from our bosses on our jobs for saving money or creating a time saving gadget or procedure, but we don’t recognize the workings of the Lord in our lives and throughout the land and universe as he creates and sustains EVERYTHING and simply asks that we acknowledge Him for His wonderful Word and Works.
We should give God constant praise and worship, not just for the grand things that he does in our lives and in our world but for the seemingly small, insignificant and mundane things that He does every minute of every day. There are so many things God deserves to be praised for that go unnoticed or that we take for granted. But, each time we notice these things we should give a little “SHOUT OUT” to God. If nothing more than a quietly whispered, “Yay God”, or a glance upwards and a finger point towards heaven, ala the athletes on the basketball courts.
I love science. I think any Christian should at least have a slight appreciation for science, because the scientists, with all of their theories and hypotheses, show us daily, just how great God is and how worthy He is of our praise; despite the fact that many scientists are atheists or agnostic. That’s right, they inadvertently prove God’s greatness, even when trying to disprove His very existence. Give praise where praise is due. Thanks guys!
They show us God’s greatness because, no matter how successful they are at defining, explaining and “solving” the mysteries of nature and the universe, there is always something deeper, more mysterious, more unexplainable which remains just out of reach. There is always that which cannot be understood. There is always that which defies logic. There is always that which is beyond understanding. At the root of it all, there is always God!
For proof of what I’ve just said, look at this verse from Acts 17th chapter: “23.) For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: ‘to an unknown god’. So, you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you”.
Consider this verse from Isaiah 55:8 which says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD” or this one from 1 Corinthians 2:11 which says: “For who among men knows the thoughts of man except his own spirit within him? So too, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God”.
The full essence of who God is, always remains just outside of the understanding of even the greatest scientific minds. That’s the proof, for if God is outside of our scientific understanding, then every time we reach the limit of that understanding, there is God.
When the top of the mountain was the limit of our perception, God was at the top of the mountain. When the sky was beyond the limit of our perception, God was in the sky.
When we reached space, God was at the edge of space.
When we reached the beginning of time, the creation of the universe or “the BIG BANG” as it is scientifically known, we were left to wonder, well who initiated the BIG BANG?
God is so great, so worthy to be praised. When someone says to you, “your son looks just like you” or “you daughter looks just like her mother”, think about these scientific facts that prove the greatness of God:
1. Within every cell of our bodies there exists a very detailed instruction code, much like a miniature computer program. As you may know, a computer program is made up of ones and zeros, like this: 110010101011000. The way they are arranged tells the computer program what to do.
The DNA code in each of our cells is very similar. It’s made up of four chemicals that scientists abbreviate as A, T, G, and C. These are arranged in the human cell like this: CGTGTGACTCGCTCCTGAT and so on. They tell the cells how to develop and how to arrange themselves and determine what you and your child looks like. Your child gets them from you at the moment of conception. THERE ARE THREE BILLION OF THESE LETTERS IN EVERY HUMAN CELL! PRAISE GOD.
When you look at the stars at night, consider this:
2. If you assume a grain of sand has an average size and you calculate how many grains are in a teaspoon and then multiply by all the beaches and deserts in the world, the Earth has roughly (and we’re speaking very roughly here) 7.5 x 10 to the 18th power, grains of sand, or seven quintillion, five hundred quadrillion grains. That is 7,500,000,000,000,000,000.
There are more stars than this in just the VISIBLE universe, approximately, 10 sextillions or 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. There are many more which we don’t have the technology to see yet.
3. There are approximately the same number of molecules in one drop of water.
So, as if any of us really need any reason to praise God for His Wonderful Words and Works, take a look at the sand on the beach next time you visit PC; or look up at the night sky on a clear night; or just look at one drop of water then lift your eyes and point towards heaven, He’ll know what you mean.
